During his 20s and 30s, Rick Kaempfer worked in radio, producing legendary shows by Hall of Famers John Records Landecker and Steve Dahl & Garry Meier.
During his 40s, Kaempfer became a full-time writer. He wrote or co-wrote four books during that time (“The Living Wills”, “Records Truly Is My Middle Name”, “$everance”, and “The Radio Producer’s Handbook”), while also serving as the primary caregiver and stay-at-home dad for three growing boys (ages 10, 8, and 3). Care to guess which half of his job was a bigger challenge?
As a means of making sense of it all, Rick wrote a column about his parenting adventures at the end of every week. He posted those humorous stories on his daily blog (rickkaempfer.blogspot.com), and before he knew it, Rick had developed a following.
The Northwest Indiana Times came calling, and for the next eight years Rick wrote his weekly column under the title “Father Knows Nothing” for various different properties at nwi.com. With the help of this added exposure, and the explosion of social media, Rick’s following grew. He may not have gotten any better at the hard part of his job (hence the title of the column and the book), but he began to be recognized for his writing. The Chicago Headline Club twice nominated Kaempfer for a presigious Peter Lisagor Award for best newspaper-affiliated blog in Chicago. (And though Roger Ebert at the Sun Times came home with the award, Rick did get to put on a suit and drink ten dollar cocktails with the journalistic glitterati for a couple of evenings.)
In 2013, just after he turned 50 years old, Rick reluctantly bid a fond farewell to Father Knows Nothing. He wanted to turn his decade of writing into a book. For the next eight months, Kaempfer waded through 400 old columns, wrote some new material, and wove these memorable stories into the narrative form you can purchase today.
To his readers his message is clear “This is definitely NOT a how-to-book. More like a how-not-to-book.”
To his sons “When it’s time for therapy, just hand this book to your shrink. It will save you a lot of time and money.”
It’s certainly not their fault that Father Knows Nothing.

Father Knows Nothing, proves beyond a doubt, that Father really does “know best.” In spite of being a writer myself, I have a confession to make – I don’t even read my own articles, blogs, scripts or books, in one sitting, from beginning to end, or cover to cover – but the moment I opened up Father Knows Nothing, by Rick Kaempfer (Eckhartz Press, 2014) and started to scan the uproariously funny, yet heartfelt radio transcripts, contained within the introduction, I knew instantly that I was not going to be able to put this book down! Never in my life has any book moved me to roll on the floor with uproarious laugher, while simultaneously tugging at the heart in profound, meaningful ways that required an entire box of Kleenex. This book is a sparkling diamond, whether or not you have children of your own, this literary gem is a must-read book. In his own inimitable style, the author spins a captivating, humorous, yet sensitively insightful web of hysterically funny, yet poignant anecdotes, capturing readers and holding them spellbound. From cover to cover, this book is jam packed with 250 unforgettable pages of real-life, sometimes wacky, other times tear-jerking situations that actually took place in the author’s suburban Chicago home, when he switched roles with his lovely and patient wife Bridget, and became a stay-at-home dad. Frankly, I would love to see this book brought to life on stage by Second City as a series of vignettes. Better yet, it would make a rock solid TV sit-com. The Brady Bunch and Father Knows Best can’t even come close to the humor, realism, and sensitivity presented in Father Knows Nothing. Get yourself a copy today, and get an extra copy for your Dad for Father’s Day, and while you are at it, buy a third copy for your Mom for Mother’s Day. It is really THAT good! All can relate to this realistic, yet hilariously entertaining, portrayal of family life in suburban America! The title might be Father Knows Nothing, but by the time you read the final sentences, you will realize that “Father Knows Something” after all. - K.P. LynneProduct details

Father Knows Nothing edition by Rick Kaempfer Humor Entertainment eBooks Reviews
Over thirty years ago, I saw Michael Keaton in Mr. Mom and thought I had experienced the most hilarious entertainment of my life; then, I read Rick Kaempfer’s Father Knows Nothing. Rick proved that a real life Mr. Mom is exponentially more comical than the fictional Keaton character. The cool part is that you don’t have to be a father to relate to this book. All of us were kids, and we all had some form of family experience. Even cooler, we get to follow the riotous moments of Rick’s “Mr. Mom” and the boys (Tommy, Johnny, and Sean) from infancy to adolescence. Buy Father Knows Nothing. Read. Laugh. Enjoy. Bravo, Rick.
Funny and endearing, Rick is a great story-teller. It's an easy read, and anyone with kids (or anyone who knows a kid) will enjoy it.
"Father Knows Nothing" is laugh out loud funny! I can't decide if it is a work of complete fiction, or the most insightful book on parenting that I have ever read.
I asked for this book as a gift from my "Secret Santa" because I know the author. I knew he was a good writer, but I didn't know exactly HOW good. Few books, even very funny ones, make me laugh out loud. Father Knows Nothing did, several times. And not just chuckles either, but LAUGHS. Rick is a funny guy, and even funnier in written form. I started reading it on Christmas Day, and finished the next day. This, with two little kids running around. THAT'S how good it is.
This book is laugh out loud funny! With a 3 year old and a teenager at home this book has a great mix of stories that I have experienced first hand with my kids and those that can only be had with 3 boys and possibly only in the Kaempfer household. My wife planned on reading the book after I completed it, and it was a struggle not to tell her about the book every few minutes while I was reading it. Actually, my daughter (13) picked up the book and within minutes was laughing. I would (and have) recommend(ed) this book to anyone, not just those with kids.
This book had me thoroughly entertained. I found myself both wincing and laughing at all of the great little moments from the Kaempfer family. From touching to embarrassing, Rick's refreshing take on fatherhood is one that all fathers can relate to. The true gift of this book is that you can't help but pull parallels from your own pool of little family moments. Rick's message is simple yet profound write down all the little moments of laughter and joy you share with your children. You'll be surprised to find out that you may have actually known how to be a Dad after all.
I'm a fan of a lot of lesser known authors Rick Kaempfer is one of them. My kids are off to college and I've finally started reading more again. This is a really funny book. It's quite a diversion from his two earlier novels that I really liked (Severance and The Living Wills). He is a great writer and apparently able to shift genres pretty easily. Summary - this is a funny book and I can't encourage you enough to check out those other two. I think he has some others, but those are the ones that turned me on to him, and the reason I bought this one.
