VILLAGE IN THE SUN DANE CHANDOS 9781245658973 Books

Having lived in Ajijic in the early 60's Dane Chandos (a pseudonym for a pair of authors) describes the village in the early days of ex-pats arrivals there. Written in a folksy style it gives insight into the area before the onslaught of tourism and overpriced building. But the charm remains the same. The book is pricey, but if yoy know the area, it is worth it.

VILLAGE IN THE SUN DANE CHANDOS 9781245658973 Books Reviews

A great but slow paced vista of a place many Americans know. Some of the vestages remain to this day. Most gone. Paved over like a parking lot. This book is available online for free but has errors. I'd like to know more about the authors.
We moved to Ajijic area recently, and this book fills in so many gaps about the place that we are curious about, yet have a hard time finding answers to. That it is set 70+ years ago is really nice, as so much has changed with the ingress of so many gringos seeking a better climate and a quieter and more affordable (at least for now) lifestyle. What fish used to be in the lake, since that seems hard to understand now. How do the local Indios (as they are referred to in the book) approach things? Clearly just one (or two, I guess) people's opinions, but they seem very good observers for sure, and are empathetic to many cultural differences, which is part of the charm and challenge of the area. Written before there was a Lake Chapala Society with a big English language library, or good roads between towns, it is a great look into the past of a very interesting area.
Picture shows book with dustcover, received without. Would have been 5 stars had I received.
